About
Hi! I am Shuaib, currently an Adjunct Lecturer at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. As a Computer Science graduate, I have a strong passion for learning and teaching. My research interest spans Computer Vision, Computational Genomics and Distributed Systems.
Background
I completed my B.Sc. in Computer Science and Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 2024. During my undergraduate years, I developed a keen interest in Computer Vision and Computational Genomics. I have also been teaching as an Adjunct Lecturer at BUET since September 2024.
Research Experience
Undeergraduate Thesis
For my undergraduate thesis in Computational Genomics, I focused on detecting structural variations in genomes using deep learning techniques under the guidance of Dr. Atif Hasan Rahman. My work extended the PEPPER-MARGIN-DeepVariant codebase, a small variant caller pipeline for long-read sequencing data. Key contributions included:
- Modifying the pipeline to detect structural variations.
- Improving accuracy by consolidating similar variants.
- Training a deep learning model to filter out false positives.
- Benchmarking the pipeline against state-of-the-art variant callers.
Collaborative Research
During my junior year, I worked under the guidance of Dr. A.B.M Alim Al Islam on digitizing hand drawn cadastral maps using OpenCV, QGIS and deep learning techniques. The project aimed to automate the process of digitizing raster cadastral maps, which is currently done manually and is extremely time-consuming. This work was able to reduce the human efforts require by upto 51%.
